Vision
From its inception, the vision of Harbor Presbyterian Church has been to ignite a church-planting movement that so fills the City of San Diego with the Gospel of Jesus Christ that the people of the city are changed in every dimension—spiritually, socially and culturally.
The Gospel Renews Lives
Grace Renewal. The gospel changes lives. The gospel is “the power of God” (Rom.1:16) that changes not only unbelievers but believers as well. All problems—personal, relational, and global—are the result of sin. God’s solution for sin is the gospel.
City Positive. The gospel makes us a church for the City. The gospel gives us love for people. Cities are filled with people, with tremendous needs, receptivity and potential. Therefore we are drawn to the city with love and respect.
Prayer Focused. The gospel makes us a people of prayer. The gospel enables us to pray with humility and confidence. Humility for we are far more sinful than we thought. Confidence for through Jesus we are far more loved than we ever dreamed.
Movement mindset. The gospel makes every believer a minister. The gospel empowers all God’s people for ministry. So we will encourage Christians to serve the city. And we will partner with churches and ministries to work for a great city.
The Gospel Renews the Church
Outward face. The gospel makes us a church for others. The gospel gives us respect, love and hope for every non-Christian, and it enables us not to live for ourselves but for our friends, neighbors and associates who don’t believe.
Vital community. The gospel makes true friendship possible. The gospel frees us to be real friends. Without the gospel, we look to others for our significance, security and satisfaction. The gospel fulfills these longings, freeing us to love unconditionally.
Church Planting. The gospel renews the City spiritually. The gospel energizes the planting of new churches. It will take, not a church, but a movement of church planting churches to transform the city.
The Gospel Renews the City
Marketplace Ministry. The gospel renews the City culturally. The gospel enables Christians to work in their vocations with Christian distinctiveness, excellence and integrity, thus transforming the culture in which we live from the inside out.
Mercy Ministries. The gospel renews the City socially. The gospel gets at the root of social problems. Sin causes social injustice and brokenness. We will seek to follow Jesus as He heals the city socially—through mercy and justice.
* These values were greatly shaped by the work of Redeemer NYC and Tim Keller.
