What is a Community Group?
Community Groups are small communities of six to twelve people meeting during the week. They are primary Christian communities, the first place Christians turn to for applying the Gospel to their lives. They are also the heart of Harbor's pastoral care network. All groups are led by trained lay-leaders from the congregation who receive continued oversight and support.
Each group expects to experience Jesus Christ, in His presence and in His power, enabling lives to be transformed through mutual ministry. This transformation happens when a genuine Christian community is forged, a community that is shaped by the Gospel. In our Community Groups, people come to know Jesus Christ and to experience his presence in a way that cannot happen without community. The community that is created is not merely an instrument for achieving something else; it is a goal itself, through which other benefits will flow. As lives are woven together in Christ, and when Christian community is nurtured, people are then equipped and released for God's work in the world.
Our groups have a rich and broad appeal. They are more than just bible studies, they include prayer, worship, fellowship, sharing of what God is doing in our lives, spiritual nurture, friendships and opportunities for service.
While some churches may have small groups on the side, Harbor OB is organizing around our Community Groups. They are the church. Therefore, belonging to a Community Group is the way to be actively a part of Harbor.
What Is a Christian Community?
· A Community that Applies the Gospel to Our Lives
We need others to help us apply the truth about the Gospel to our daily lives. The implications of our life with Christ are broad, so broad that we rarely understand them by ourselves. As we remind one another about grace, we help each other open our lives to transformation according to God's purposes.
· A Community that Cares for Each Other
We are told in Scripture to: encourage, serve, rejoice, weep with, correct, instruct, sing to, build up, accept and love one another. These commands are best followed in personal relationships. Community Groups also serve as a key way to keep Harbor's leadership aware of any pastoral concerns or troubles facing members of our congregation.
· A Community Where Gifts Are Exercised
Community Groups are a place where spiritual gifts, including a vision for ministry and service, are discovered and developed. Group participants are encouraged not only to attend, but also to engage themselves in relationships with group members, supporting each other in Christ.
· A Community that Witnesses to the Gospel
Community Groups are a place where people who are considering Christianity can discover who Jesus Christ is, in a environment of nurture and love. Christianity is seen as not merely doctrine, but a life-changing encounter with the person of Jesus. Speaking the truth in love...the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:15-16).
